Mic Tyler
Solo Euphonium
Banding History
Mic originally comes from the South of England, although has spent much of his life travelling around the country, finally settling (for now at least) in Yorkshire in 1994, when he moved here to Leeds for work.
Picking up a brass instrument for the first time at the age of 7 with the Bury St Edmunds Salvation Army Youth Band, Mic comes from a strong Salvation Army musical background with brass music very much in the blood, both his Grandfathers were Bandmasters and his second cousin is Martin Cordner, a well respected Salvation Army composer, and over the years has moved around the country and played various positions and instruments.
Mics' early days were predominantly with the Salvation Army (SA) with positions at Croydon Citadel SA Youth Band on Euphonium and Bass Trombone, moving to Solo Cornet with Hull Icehouse SA, where, at the age of 14, he took the role of Youth Band conductor, Solo Euphonium and Bb Bass with the SA West Yorkshire Divisional Youth Band (although a bit of an all rounder at the time meant stints on Flugel, Tenor Horn and Trombone as well), Bb Bass at Leicester Central SA during an all too brief stay at University in Leicester.
His first non-Salvation Army band experience came with the former Yorkshire Evening Post band on Tutti Cornet.
Mic is now our Solo Euphonium after spending nearly 6 years on Eb Bass since joining the Drighlington Band back in 1998. The last few years has also seen him get involved with other areas of the organisation, with his current responsibilities including Band Librarian, Youth Band worker and website manager.
Professional
Mic is currently employed as a Programmer and Consultant with the Phoenix IT Group plc specialising in Internet Based Solutions, a career which some may say is the only thing that influences his way of life more than banding.
Hobbies
Building, programming and general tinkering with computers (of course), live music, food (especially Japanese and Italian), beer and working stage security at festivals during the summer.
