Banding History
Chris was first taught to play at the age of 12 by Alan Botterill, the Soprano Cornet player of Leeds Model band.
He then joined the full band, just 6 months later, under the musical direction of Peter Kitson.
In 1966, Chris played his first London National Finals Contest on 3rd cornet, claiming 3rd place in the 2nd section at Kensington Town Hall, the test piece was "'The Moor of Venice' by William Alwyn.
Apart from a spell with Leeds City (Commercial Club) band, Chris stayed with Leeds Model band, through it's evolution as Cameron Ironworks, John Waddington band, Yorkshire Relish band and finally the Yorksire Evening Post band.
In 1985, after 3rd and 4th prizes in the London National Finals, and Pontins Finals, respectively Chris joined the Lockwood band and teamed up, once again, with the musical director Peter Kitson.
After winning 1st prize in the 1993 First Section Yorkshire Regional contest, Chris had a four year break from banding when he and his wife, Maureen, moved to Horbury (nr. Wakefield) as landlords of the Cricketers Arms pub (where they remained for 14 years!).
In 1998, after a short spell with the Tingley band, Chris then moved to Kippax band where he stayed until joining Drighlington in 2001.
Professional
Chris has worked as a Police Constable, Security Manager, Store Detective and Pub Landlord. He is now enjoying life as a "White van man", delivering truck and trailer parts for HS ATEC in Ossett.
